NIGHT of the JUMPs Berlin Recap

LINE UP Berlin

Freestyle madness in the Uber Arena Berlin as Luc Ackermann wins four from four at NIGHT of the JUMPs

On Saturday, October 5, there was pure action sports in the German capital. At the NIGHT of the JUMPsin Berlin's Uber Arena, eight of the world's best freestyle motocross athletes competed in the fourth Grand Prix of the World Tour Championship. In addition, MTB, BMX and Scooter athletes as well as the trampoline artists offered breathtaking tricks under the hall roof.

In  the Freestyle contest, the athletes had to show their seven best tricks in 80 seconds to qualify for the final. From the two qualifying groups with four athletes each, only the two best placed riders made it to the final round.

In the first qualifying group , Mikolej Tempka (POL), Libor Podmol (CZE), Matej Cesak (CZE) and Marc Pinyol (ESP) fought for the 2 coveted spots. The Polish young gun was first to enter the arena. ‚Zapsa‘ started the battle and made a good impression with tricks like Superflip, No-hand Backflip, Cliffhanger or Cordova Backflip. However, the 2010 World Champion Libor Podmol topped this directly with his Underflip, Cliffhanger Backflip, Clicker to Super Indy Flip. His compatriot, Matej Cesak, countered with a twisted Tsunami Flip, Hart Attack Backflip and Lazyboy Flip. On the Double-Up final jump, which is scored as double the regular points, Matej landed his first Front Flip in competition to secure a final spot. Now it was either going to be Libor Podmol or Marc Pinyol.  The Spaniard started with a 3-peat trick, Indy to Indy to Indy backflip over the Next-Gen ramp. This was followed by a Frontflip, Tsunami Flip and Surfer Tsunami Backflip. When he didn't pull off the Cliffhanger flip, things got tight again. But the 257 points were still enough for the final round.

The second qualifying group consisted of Andreu Lacondeguy (ESP), the two Italians Leonardo Fini and Davide Rossi as well as the German FMX World Champion Luc Ackermann. The Spaniard celebrated his premiere at the NIGHT of the JUMPs and wanted to show everything. Tsunami Flip and 360 over the Next-Gen ramp and even a Front Flip at the end, but unfortunately he crashed on landing and was out of the race. Leonardo Fini had a ‚deadsailor‘ on his Cliffhanger flip, which cost him the final spot despite the Hart Attack flip and Rowedova backflip. Davide Rossi secured it with his Cliffhanger Flip, Seatgrab Indy Flip, Deadbody and Front Flip. Luc Ackermann, as the last athlete of the qualification, topped everything in the preliminary round. Frontflip, 360, Tsunami Flip, Holygrab and the Double Backflip secured him the highest score and the best position in the final with 275 points.

In the final,  Matej Cesak was the first to enter the track. He had to show eight tricks, and he got his whole repertoire out. He wanted his first podium of the series and rode back for the Front Flip ramp at the Double Up. But this time he slipped away on landing and fell. His friend and training partner Davide Rossi wanted to get his second podium after Zurich. With tricks such as Frontflip, No Hand Frontflip, Tsunami flip and the Cliffhanger flip, he secured 257 points and the podium place. Marc Pinyol was transformed after a short siesta during the break. In addition to the Front flip, Triple Indy backflip and Surfer-Tsunami flip, he also showed the California roll in the Double Up and secured second place with 265 points. It was not enough for his first victory, as the last rider to enter the arena was the German FMX Terminator Luc Ackermann. Frontflip, 360, Seatgrab Flip, No Hand Frontflip, Holygrab, Tsunami Flip, Clicker to Superflip and the Double Backflip as the crowning glory left no doubt as to who was the winner of the day. The Uber Arena boiled over when the scoreboard showed 279 points and Luc Ackermann won the Grand Prix in Berlin.

In the Best Whip Contest, six riders flew through the arena. Here, Davide Rossi and Matej Cesak outdid their opponents one after the other and fought a true whip battle for the cup. The spectators finally chanted Matej Cesak as the winner due to his incredible lookback whips. Cesak has now won all four Whip Contests of the season.

The two Italians Davide Rossi and Leonardo Fini won the Synchro Contest with perfectly synchronized tsunami flips and indy flips and triumphed over Libor Podmol and Pepa Aron.

In the MTB and Scooter Best Trick,  there were crazy tricks to marvel at with Twister to Bounce Frontflip by Alejandro Bonafe, Frontflip Tailwhip by Lucas Huppert and the Scooter Inward Frontflip by Maty Pekarek. The MTB Best Trick Trophy was won by Alejandro Bonafe from Spain.

Some of the best trampoline freestylers in the world performed at the Eurotramp Freestyle. Germany and the Netherlands fought for the day's victory, which the Dutch team of Milco Abrahams & Luuk Swinkels taking the win, despite Germany doing the five-fold somersault.

With his fourth victory in the fourth Grand Prix, Luc Ackermann continues to hold pole position in the NIGHT of the JUMPs Tour Ranking 2024. He leads with 80 points ahead of Marc Pinyol, who has 66 points.

In the Brinx Cup, where only the best trick from the events in Zurich, Berlin, Cologne and Hanover is scored, Luc Ackermann is also in the lead with his impressive 360, followed by Marc Pinyol with his Sky Jet and Leonardo Fini with the Rowedova Flip.

  • The next competition of the NIGHT of the JUMPs will take place on October 26, 2024 in Cologne's Lanxess Arena.
