Hallenstadion Zürich
Back in Zurich
Daring tricks on two wheels at breathtaking heights and spectacular stunts – all of this was showcased at NIGHT of the JUMPs on Saturday in Zurich. At the Swiss Grand Prix of the world’s leading freestyle MX sports series, eight FMX athletes competed for crucial points towards the Tour Championship in the Hallenstadion.
After competitions in Munich and Bremen, German FMX world champion and X Games winner Luc Ackermann was confidently leading the rankings with two victories. In the absence of his toughest competitor, Spain’s Maikel Melero, he aimed to further extend his lead with another win. But first, he had to survive the qualification round, which consisted of two groups of four riders, from which the top two from each group would advance to the final.
In the first qualification group, Mikolaj Tempka, Matej Cesak, Leonardo Fini, and Marc Pinyol competed. Tempka opened the competition, being the first to jump over the new Next Gen ramp with a 1-Hand Seatgrab Indy. Matej Cesak raised the level with a Lazy Flip, Tsunami Flip, and Hartattack Flip, despite back pain, taking the lead over Tempka. Italian rider Leonardo Fini surprised everyone with his comeback, performing Hartflip, Rowedowa Flip, Cliffhanger Flip, and Ruler Flip, securing his place in the final. Marc Pinyol from Spain closed the group with a spectacular display: Kiss of Death Flip, Frontflip, Bar Solid, and Surfer Tsunami Flip on the Next Gen ramp, earning him 259 points and the second spot in the final.
The second qualification group began with Germany’s Ronny Showman on an electric bike, showing off some old-school tricks like Double Seatgrab and 1-Hand Supercan Indy, but it wasn’t enough to make the final. Italy’s Davide Rossi delivered strong performances with a Cliffhanger Flip, Tsunami Flip, Deadbody, and Frontflip, putting pressure on Harry Bink. Bink, the Triple Flip Nitro World Games winner, showcased 1-Hand Nac to 1-Hand Nac Flip, Clicker to Double Superflip, Rulerflip, and Hartattack Backflip over the Next Gen ramp but left the Double Backflip for the final, which cost him his spot unless Luc Ackermann made a mistake. However, Ackermann came out strong, performing a Frontflip, Tsunami Backflip, 360°, Holygrab, and Double Backflip, earning him 276 points and the top spot for the final.
In the final, Leonardo Fini was the first to take to the course. He had to perform two more tricks than in the qualifying round, but with a Holygrab to Rock Solid and a 1-Hand-Can Flip, he only scored 245 points – one trick too few. His friend and training partner Davide Rossi aimed to capitalize on this mistake, showing a Frontflip, No Hand Frontflip, and Cordova Flip, which earned him 256 points and a secure third place.
Marc Pinyol couldn’t afford any mistakes, but the Spaniard stayed cool and completed his last jump with a California Roll, which the judges rewarded with 268 points, putting him in the lead for the time being.
The final rider was Luc Ackermann, who went "all in": Frontflip, Holygrab to Rock Solid, Tsunami Flip, Flatspin 360 Lookback, Heelclicker to KOD Flip, Seatgrab Flip Indy, Cliffhanger to 1-Hand Lander, No Hand Frontflip, and a Double Backflip to finish. The Hallenstadion erupted, and the judges rewarded him with 281 points, crowning the German FMX Terminator as the winner.
In the Best Whip Contest, six riders competed for two final spots. Czech Whipmaster Matej Cesak and Luc Ackermann secured their places, beating out their competitors. In the Whip final, Matej was unbeatable with his Lookback Whips, celebrating his third win in the third contest of the season.
The Synchro Contest was won by the Italian duo Davide Rossi and Leo Fini, with perfectly synchronized Cordova Flips, Rock Solids, and Indy Flips, triumphing over Marc Pinyol and Mikolaj Tempka.
In the MTB and Scooter Best Trick, there were impressive tricks such as Doubleflip to Bounce Frontflip by Alejandro Bonafe, Frontflip Tailwhip by Lukas Hupert, 360 Triple Tailwhip by Nicolas Kroffic, and Scooter Bike Frontflip by Maty Pekarek. Alejandro Bonafe secured the trophy.
Spectators in Zurich also witnessed a premiere with Eurotramp Freestyle, where some of the world’s best trampoline freestylers, including the world champion, performed breathtaking tricks up to 8 meters high.
With his third victory in the third Grand Prix, Luc Ackermann confidently leads the NIGHT of the JUMPs Tour Ranking 2024 with 60 points. Marc Pinyol follows in second place with 48 points, ahead of his compatriot Maikel Melero with 36 points.
In the first-ever Brinx Cup, where only the best trick from events in Zurich, Berlin, Cologne, and Hannover is counted, Luc Ackermann leads with his impressive 360, followed by Marc Pinyol with his Sky Jet and Leonardo Fini with the Rowedova Flip.
The next events of NIGHT of the JUMPs will take place on October 5th in the Uber Arena Berlin and on October 26th in Cologne. The Tour Champion will be crowned on November 9th at the NIGHT of the JUMPs premiere in Hannover. Tickets are available at www.livenation.de/artist/night-of-the-jumps-tickets.
